desk phones are still around. Some of them aren't even considered voip yet ;-)
However, Kev makes a point that we probably don't really need different identities, since we can base client behavior and UI on the supported features (caps/disco), not the advertised identity of the device.
caps are much more fine-grained. Category seems to be used mainly for displaying nice icons for different kinds of entities...
