Hi Email!

Is that something we'd expect the client to know?

It's something we often do in Jitsi and we rely very much on that. If we one day decide to add an XMPP transport we'd need it to have that option.

Or might that be
added by something smart in the middle?

Are you implying that clients are not smart? ;)

Obviously anyone in the middle can apply any kind of routing and obviously such a destination should in no way be mandatory.

Still, clients have this option with their regular TCP/UDP sockets, so it seems to me that it would be a good thing to also have it with virtual XMPP sockets. Here's what 3261 says on request sending:

Local policy MAY specify an alternate set of destinations to attempt.
If the Request-URI contains a SIPS URI, any alternate destinations
MUST be contacted with TLS. Beyond that, there are no restrictions
on the alternate destinations if the request contains no Route header
   field.

You can't really this unless you can specify a destination.

Cheers,
Emil

Peter
