Right, I also think that it's sensible to replace carbons with MAM
subscriptions in the long term.

FYI, I'm currently working on a XEP for message IDs (XEP-MID):
http://geekplace.eu/xeps/xep-mid/xep-mid.html

While this is intended to be used with MAM, in order to assign every
message a unique and stable ID, it is not withing the scope of XEP-MID
how entities become aware of the ID(s) of their send/outgoing messages.
