This seems to be a recurring theme, and I'm not sure I like it. This couples presence (and the roster) even more tightly with messaging than it already is. I was hoping XMPP could be used purely for messaging in some cases, without necessarily having to deal with presence subscriptions (e.g. like Signal) Guiding clients down the path of (silently) rejecting messages without presence kills this use case, even for clients that decide not to do this but still want to talk to other clients.
