As in a peer reviewed study? No. But look at the Stackexchange Network,
where every information is stored in Markdown. Same goes for github. Or
the rising number of Discourse installations, where every post is also
CommonMark.

And for the "flowing through the XMPP network" part: I am currently
writing a Discourse to XMPP bridge for example. And I believe that the
XMPP network wants to interact with entities.
