I've seen that, but I think your asumptions are wrong: - a bot can trivially generate XHTML-IM which goal is actually to structure text - a gateway should not send markup in <body>, if it's not cleaning the content it's doing the job badly. - if a client doesn't interpret XHTML-IM, why would it interpret Markdown? If it's to go with the raw syntax, text alone (i.e. formatted outside of text syntax) is far more readable than Markdown.
