To carry forward the formatting discussion, I'd like to collect some use cases from the community. These aren't necessarily restricted to instant messaging, and should be from the perspective of your users. Please don't say, "I want to provide this feature", I'm trying to figure out *why* you want to provide a given feature and what benefit it gives to your users.
A specific example: "as a user sending an instant message to a friend I want to emphasize part of a sentence". What other use cases can you think of?
