This is for Monal, an iOS and MacOS xmpp client:
As developers tend to be a bit too proud of their own peace of software we
asked our users for their honest opinion of Monal. We did not expect this:
--------

For a while macOS was in really bad place when it came to XMPP clients. Now,
in the year 2021, we are in a much better place. Thanks to the kind developers
of Monal and Beagle (Tigase) there are two usable clients to choose from. When
I first used Monal, macOS and iOS codebase were separate and honestly the mac
client raised more questions than it answered. With macOS 10.15 Catalina Apple
introduced Catalyst and Monal adapted that quickly so that both macOS and iOS
clients do now share the same codebase which instantly made the macOS client a
lot more usable as it was previously lacking behind the iOS version.

Stability should always be a top priority when it comes to software. Without
stability no feature will ever cut it. And Monal has really improved in that
area. Another area receiving much time and love was OMEMO. The result is a
stable client offering OMEMO encryption, which should be a good basis to keep
the momentum and focus on the next steps:

For 2021 group chat support is planned and personally I could not be more
excited for this and it fills an important gap. There are many projects with
XMPP community channel and it is such a nice way to follow a project and get
new users and developers involved. Along with that, support for [XEP-0048:
Bookmarks](https://github.com/anurodhp/Monal/issues/19) will hopefully see the
light of day.

Obviously there is always room for fine-tuning UI and I hope that will also
continue. Really excited to see where Monal is going and hope that the
progress will refelct in user numbers. Having a decentralized alternative in
the Apple ecosystem is crucial and one aspect enabling users to even switch
between OSs more easily.

Kudos to all devs involved for making this awesome software.

--------
Thanks a lot to all of our alpha and beta testers. And let’s see what we can
accomplished together this new year 2021.
