I wanted to also mention that I have thrown together an example of its use.
https://github.com/mellium/fediverse-xmpp-onboarding The example lets you log in with a Mastodon (or probably other fediverse compatible tools) instance and if the account is verified it uses this to generate a token that allows you to register on an associated XMPP server, giving Mastodon communities easy self-provisioning on a related chat network.
