Hi,

About nickname, it depends on your use case with xmpp.
If you want to write a standard client for a federated world, i would
suggest ignoring the field in the VCard, and not allow users to set it.
Its less complex to have only one place to store a nickname, and everybody
supports 0172.
Also its way less traffic to subscribe to 0172 node updates.

Of course nobody stops you from syncing those two.

Regards
Philipp
