The gurus on this list will be better at this than I, but partitions 
enable you to use your drive as though you had more than one 
computer!  It's a DIVIDER utility.  You tell your drive setup 
software to make (#) of partitions.  Then you can put all of your 
data files on one partition, all your system files on another, 
utilities on another.  The larger the drive, the more useful this 
setup is.  Smaller drives (Less than 10 gigs) are not really helpful 
because you run out of space too fast.  I have not done it yet, 
although I use a 30 gig drive because I like to work with iMovie and 
it is a spaceHog!
