If you decide to go the file sharing route I recommend a Realtek ethernet card. I installed one and downloaded the drivers (Direct Download link for OSX RT8139 driver: ftp://ftp.realtek.com.tw/lancard/drivers/8139/rtl8139_091.tar) and bought a crossover cable from the same place as the network card to save on shipping (owc.com) I'm a nurse and set it up with a little advice from the list so it's not very hard. A firewire connection is said to be faster but it transfers plenty fast. The card and cable may come in useful in the future too. I think putting in your old HD as a slave in the G4 should be workable also.
