From Rayovac, the people what makes em...

Introduction:

Today's sophisticated personal computers (PC) accept and log data
against a time base measured by their RTC. This clock is powered by the
PC's main power system while the computer is turned on. However, when
the PC is turned off, a battery is required to maintain key time and
memory functions. The most critical piece of memory is the system's
configuration file. This file contains vital information on the PC's
disk drive layout and external port assignments. To users, the loss of
the configuration file looks like a serious malfunction in the PC. In
addition to users experiencing lost work time, repair expense, and
inconvenience, this situation also lowers consumers' perceived quality
of the PC's when their computer clock battery failure occurs.
