Try booting using the Mac "OS x.x Base" set for your OS. If that works, then slowly add extensions back into the mix and see what starts causing the problem. Also, have you trashed the TCP/IP preferences? Let us know what version of the OS you are trying to run. I use Ethernet on my SM 5500 with OS 9.1 all the time with no problems.
