I tried USB on OS 8.1 and it was the only time I had a Macintosh boot disk became so corrupted I had to reformat it. You should plan on updating your OS to 8.5.1 or 8.6 before installing a USB card, which on my SM simply did not crash at all (I'm running OS 9.1 now). Also, if you have a 5 slot SM, make sure to install the USB card in one of the 2 slots closest to the motherboard, as some G3 upgrade cards have problems if the card is in one of the outer 3 slots. As for the card itself, as long as the card is marketed as 'Mac Compatible' it should work. I bought a $15 USB card from Fry's, marked as Mac Compatible, and it installed and is working with no problems. I would stick with a 2 port card as some 4 port cards have not worked in some Macs and Mac compatibles.
