The good news is ram is much cheaper than it used to be.
I have bought Ram from ebay, owc
(http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Page.cfm?Parent=22&Title=DIMMS%20%28EDO%2
0too%29&Template=) and Chip Merchant (http://www.thechipmerchant.com) for
several macs. The only one I ever got that didnt work was from an eBay
auction- it made my computer crash- but the seller replaced it with a good
one. I would recommend OWC for price and reliability- just $22 (+ship)
currently for 64 mb. Just look for one for a PowerMac 4400, usually easier-
make sure it's a 3.3v not 5 volt. If you dont want to buy two 64 mb chips,
buy one. I wouldnt mess with anything smaller at current prices, which your
friend may pull later to upgrade to the max (unless you want to get a 64 and
another small one because it's priced really cheap). The 32 mb chips are not
much cheaper than the 64 at owc now. I recommend you should have at least 96
mb total these days- but since it's only another $22 for the max 160 that's
what I'ld do ( thats what I did).
