Hi again,
Well, I got my SM 3000/200 back from DT&T and everything was
working fine. I initialized the HD and started installing drivers for
the HP 870Cxi that will be going with this machine. The drivers
needed upgrading which I did from the HP site.
For some reason I'm unable to get the printer to react to the
chooser. I followed the usual procedures of selecting the appropriate
printer icon in the chooser and with Apple Talk deactivated I set up
the 870Cxi in the upper right window, Closed the chooser and selected
page set up in Word or simple text just to see if I could get to the
printer software. No luck. I don't get any indication of a print
monitor window or in this case an "HP print monitor" window. That's
an interesting question actually. I see in the extensions manager
window both the standard Mac print monitor items as well as the "HP"
print monitor items. I'm wondering if there's a conflict potential
there? I've tried turning off first one set then the other with no
positive results. So that's issue No. 1
I just got 2 sticks of 64 megs of RAM memory from Other
World Computing yesterday and installed them very carefully last
evening. Mr. StarMax was NOT happy to say the least! I zapped the
PRAM and waited for the 2 chimes to sound. Then everything went down
hill from there. I got freezes in the startup process. I was finally
able to disable the extensions with the shift key during start up
only to have it freeze even without the extensions on!! I went back
and forth and checked the System Profiler and the "About this
Computer" to see any indication of the additional memory. NOTHING!
It was getting pretty late by this time and I thought it best
to give it all a rest until this evening when I get home from work.

So the Big Question is: There are 3 slots available for RAM
in the minitower version of the SM 3000. As you look in from the side
of the machine the current 32meg stick resides in the top most slot.
I'm wondering if I have to change the location of the 32 meg stick
when adding this additional memory? It was also suggested that I try
taking out the 32 meg stick altogether and seeing if the two new
sticks will work without the old stick? I'm sure some of you folks
have already encountered this problem and probably had a simple
solution. I know, it could be bad RAM memory too. I'm hoping that
Other World's reputation precedes them. I'll be watching with
interest for your replies!
                                Thanks, Jim
