I switched to HFS+ two years ago, and while I'm not presently using my StarMax, I have programs and files I originated on an LC in '92 on Sys 6.04. I'm still running, and use every day, my old TouchBase, which I purchased from Guy Kawasaki personally at the show in San Francisco about '93. I have run it on an LC, a Quadra 650, a 601e, and a UMax C500, systems from 6.04 up to the present 9.04 . . .some old programs don't work, but as far as I can see the file format is not the reason. Some of them died with System 7.
I changed to HFS+ when I went to Sys 9 . . . The problem that arose when the clones came out was that files, like MS Word, seemed to "balloon" in size. That was due to the space allocation system in the old HFS . . . the + cures that in most cases. On a friend's machine I actually installed Word 2001 last fall, he didn't like it, and I successfully removed it and got him back on Word 5.1a . . . can you believe? The Talking Moose doesn't work under late systems, Energizer Bunny will but sometimes acts up, old Microsoft Works is outmoded . . .at least I can't get it to work . . .but it is not a widespread problem. I have a StarMax tower, 180mhz, 604e, but am running a UMax J700. Best Apple [well, clone] I ever had. I don't even want a G4, altho I just acquired a 400mhz iMac. The jury is out on that one yet . . . If in doubt about any of your old programs, go to Goodwill and buy an old Mac for $5 and run 'em on it! I have a brand new Plus w/o hd, in the original boxes. I haven't been persuaded to part with it. . .yet. aye grosfader > From: Nan Karahoca <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Reply-To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (StarMax List) > Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 09:19:57 -0400 > To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (StarMax List) > Subject: Re: HFS+ and FILES > > Sorry, Lou, your note provoked another question... > > Are you saying that some older programs that work on pre-8.1 will not > work on post 8.1 with the hard drive formatted HFS+?
