Earlier this year I posed this RAM question to Crucial Technology, and after seeing this problem crop up here a few weeks ago I though it their answer was worth posting...
Question : I have recently acquired two Micron EDO memory modules. Each of them 64 Mb, non-parity for use in Power Mac 4400 and Starmax. I do have the Micron part numbers available and I have checked them against your posted information to be sure they matched the machines requirements. Here is the problem: no matter which chip I use, or which of 2 available memory slots they are, only one half of the capacity of the chip is recognized by the machine (32 out of 64 Mb). I am using a Motorola Starmax 3000/200 with MacOS 8.5.1 Do you have any suggestions for a remedy? Do the chips carry a warranty of any kind? Thanks in advance for help... -dan Answer: The 64MB modules are available in two different configurations. One has 8 64Mb chips, and the other has 32 16Mb chips. A lot of the older Power Mac systems (including 4400) require the 2k refresh modules, which have the 16Mb chips. Chances are the module you have has 64Mb chips on it. You will need to contact the company you bought them from to exchange.
