Hi all--

Sorry for this Off Topic post. I was just reminded of a problem that
I've had with Netscape 4.7x Communicator's email Messenger module using
IMAP (not POP) thru all the minor upgrades-- attempting to empty the
Trash folder from the File menu leads to an immediate quit of the app. I
know the solution, but I let the situation get to the critical point
while I was clearing out a bunch of Sent message copies. Figured others
must have/had this happen to them too so thought I would share my experiences.

What seems to happen, (with me anyway on my SM3000/180, JoeCard G3, 144
ram, OS8.6-9.1, and Netscape's memory set to 18mb) is that when too many
messages are in the Trash folder this quit behavior occurs. How many is
too many? About 50-75 plain text ones.

Solution: once this behavior occurs, select the Trash folder in the left
pane, then choose File/Compact this folder... You should now be able to
empty the trash without the quit. Seems the "Trash.snm" file (in the
IMAPmail folder/Netscape Users folder/Netscape/Preferences/System
folder) gets too large, and, for whatever reason, Netscape chokes on it.
To avoid this problem, I empty the Trash folder after only 20-30
messages and also occasionally will also use File/Compact this folder...
just to be safe.

Since these XXX.snm files for each of your folders remember all old
messages and get bigger with each message, you can keep them from
getting too large by occasionally selecting each folder and then do the
File/Compact this folder... Sometimes I can select my primary folder and
then the File menu offers: Compact all folders..., which is obviously
faster, but many times the menu just blinks???
