When I updated to 9.1, I had a freeze up on initial boot as well. My solution was to boot with extensions off, then turn off VM which was enabled by the update. Finally, I had to install ATI's latest driver update as there was an issue with the ATI drivers in 9.1 and my retail ATI PCI video card.
