A contemporary of the 1996 StarMax, the PC with Pentium CPU, has no
problem with the
two-drives-per-cable architecture; one master, one slave.

I'd be hard pressed to believe, short of a personal experiment on MY
StarMax, that you
won't be able to place two drives on the hard disk cable and leave the
CD ROM in.......
