Hi George, and everyone else!

I'm new to this mail-list, and have also been following this thread with much interest.

As for software you can use, SoundEdit16 is a pretty good and easy to use program that should get you well underway in this endeavor. It's made by Macromedia.

If I might suggest, and what I've done, is to use whatever patch-cord is necessary to connect your Mac to an open port on your stereo amplifier. I found that by using a port that's otherwise dedicated to a tape deck, is probably best. This way you can use both the input and output ports to make a connection that'll allow you to listen to streaming MP3 radio stations on your stereo, from a program like iTunes.

Hope this helps.

Cheers all,

Bill

This thread has been of great interest to me- the same day I read the 1st
post on it I had a discussion w/ a coworker and said "I wish I could convert
some of my cassette tunes to home-burned cds, mp3s and put them on my iPod".
He suggested that I see if there was an input port on my sound card and
connect the headphone jack of my stero to that (he's not a Mac user).

Sony makes a stand alone system that lets you make a
CD from any analog source, or another CD. The main
drawback is that it records only onto Audio CDs, and
that limits what you can do with them.

Can you give any more info on this? Approx price? Michael Martin posted about the iMic device:
Once you have that hooked up, you can use pretty much any sound
capture & editing software to record the material. There are lots to
 choose from out there.
How about an example?- 98% of software in stores is for PCs- I usually have
to mail-order mac software.
