Phil--

I use a Nikon CoolPix 880 with my SM3000/180, JoeCard, OS9.1. and USB card (the only necessary hardware addition to the SM needed for the camera). The camera came with a CD to install software to upload pics to the desktop and to do some camera operations such as deleting images. Camera connects via a USB cable and mounts on the desktop in a few seconds with a standard Finder window showing its folders. From there you can drag images to whatever folder you choose to upload them. Works great!

You'll need an image processing app to make mods to your images. Being somewhat familiar with Photoshop I use it to correct imperfections, take eyes that are open from one shot and paste them over closed eyes in another, and other fun changes. One thing to be aware of is that the original image is not the same proportions as a 4x6 photo. It is actually 4.5x6 so I always crop the image to one that will size to a 4.6 when printed. I also gave up trying to print out my own photos as the cartridges and the necessary high quality paper were just too expensive compared with uploading the images to Walmart.com's photocenter and having real photographic prints made for $0.26 each plus about $1.60 postage.

If you decide to use an online photoservice such as Walmart's, test some images first with different color corrections done to them, such as one original raw image, one with auto-contrast, one with auto-levels, one with auto-contrast/levels, some with different settings to the curves and/or levels that produce the best color as seen on your monitor. I placed a small number in the corner of each of these test images so I could later match the prints to my notes to determine which gave me the best results. After you find this choice then you can get predicable results. Another reason I like Walmart's photocenter is that you can share the images with others who can then visit your photo album to just view the images or can order their own prints-- pretty neat when you're on the road and want to show others images of your trip on a regular basis. Good luck...

We're planning on purchasing a digital camera in the near future, primarily so that load images into our StarMax. I would appreciate one of my fellow Max users outlining the hardware and software requirements for interfacing a digital camera with a StarMax. Also, if any of you has experience with a specific camera being particularily compatible or incompatible with your Max, I would like to know the make and model which you have.
