My experiences are with a USB Kensington 2-button scrolling mouse, but
I'd guess that the experience would be similar with a trackball.

I installed a Kensington USB card in my 3000/240 w/o any problems and
plugged in the Kensington 2 button scrolling mouse which worked fine,
with a couple of exceptions:

-- The scrolling function doesn't work with some programs (like
QuarkXpress, which Kensington acknowledges)

-- The scrolling function appears to cause one of my older programs to
crash. But it's the only one I've ever found it happening to.

The USB card installation is a snap -- although you will need OS 8.6 to
run it (at least mine did).
