I'm concerned that some may be misled by this battery thread even though
I can't say that anyone is entirely wrong. Shelf life and battery drain
are two separate things even though both enter into the ultimate life of
the pram battery. I suspect that most readers know this.

Battery drain is certainly increased when there is no power (power cord
removed) to the computer since the battery is powering the pram circuits
rather the 5 V from the power supply. I'm sure that the battery life
will be shorter if the computer is never plugged in and I suspect the
time between manuf. and first use is sometimes significant in the
ultimate life of the battery. When the computer is plugged in the 5
volts on the pram circuit should prevent most drain on the battery.
Shelf life is still a consideration here and even if the computer is
never without power, the battery will lose capacity so that it will
eventually fail if the power is turned off for any length of time. Right
now I am approaching six years usage on my original battery and know that
it may not last much longer.

These batteries were designed for a long shelf life but the ultimate life
of the battery is determined by both the shelf life and the manner of
utilization.
