I too have encountered your exact situation, except on two different machines. I've a Performa 5200cd with only 16mb of RAM, and discovered after repeated attempts and finally consulting a dealership, that OS 8.6 requires more than 16mb. Going from memory [don't miss the pun in that one] 8.6 requires at least 32 if not 64 mbs to run. On my machine, I couldn't even get the 8.6 installer to run.
As for your ethernet, my starmax machine required a 3rd party ethernet card, and hence the appropriate software installer to be installed in order for it to work. So chances are, you need to re-install the software drivers that are specific to your ethernet card.

All I want to do with the machine is to be able to run IE, Microsoft Word, and OT/PPP.
