Hi Norman. This sounds like a similar experience that I had. I concluded it was a 
power supply problem. I took it to a local mac shop, and asked them to verify my 
suspicions. 

They partially dismantled the unit to test the drive in another mac, put it back 
together, and couldn't get it to restart. They also concluded the power supply was bad 
(though they did not check it with a volt meter). 

I opened it up, and found that the battery was missing. I asked for it and put the 
battery back in, did a restart and -- low and behold -- everything worked fine.

My conclusion is that there was a cable or card somewhere that was not seated 
properly, and was accidentally fixed during the process of checking the power supply.

So, pop open your case, and wiggle and re-seat all the cards and cables. Do the same 
for the external cables. Maybe that will fix it.
