what does the flashing item look like? arrows maybe? perhaps you have your method of connecting to the internet preferences set to "show when connected" or something worded similar, in the menu bar?
What is the method you use? dial up, DSL, cable? wireless, LAN?
How much RAM do you have?
what browser are you using? and what version?

More info, more info, more info.........is needed, plus using the subject line is always a good idea on help lists, so others can chime in with their thoughts on the same subject.
