The following is empirical observation only, since I
know very little about the technical and electrical
workings of any computer.

I am responsible for the upkeep of two Starmaxes and
an Apple Performa 6300 which is very similar. All
three use the same battery to maintain internal
settings. All three of the computers used to need the
PRAM battery replaced every three years, as indicated
by the date reverting to Wozniak's BDay. (All use OS
7.6). Over five years ago some one on the list
recommended that the computers not be turned off with
the on/off button or unplugged from the wall. I have
taken to putting the CPUs to sleep rather than turning
them off. None of them have needed a new battery since
(or a new hard drive)!.

Has any one written a software script that shows the
power level of the PRAM battery? My iBooks have this
ability.

Thanks to all who have helped me in the past and will
continue to do so in the future.
