This is an interesting question. (I have to say, however, that I was
glad Kirk stuck to his guns and didn't air his pain...) I suspect it
might have to do with his inability to have a lasting relationship
with a woman. Despite his apparent sexual escapades, he is rather
like a priest in his dedication to his ship. Of course, it could be
other things as well--pain at the seeming lack of trust Spock
displays time and again, sorrow at arriving too late for his brother
and Aurelan, something he wished he'd shared with his parents (or
they'd been around to witness),pain at the thought of his coming
retirement, etc, etc, etc. After all, who has just *one* source of
pain in their lives?

You know, something just occurred to me--Kirk kept his head (yes, he
was stubborn with a capital "s") on this occasion when everyone
around him was losing his or hers...even Spock wasn't on the ball. I
guess it makes up for him losing it on other occasions.
