In contrast to its less-than-enthusiastic reception by many North American critics, 'Star Trek Nemesis' has received high marks from reviewers on the other side of the Atlantic.
Film Review's Ian Spelling awarded 'Nemesis' a score of 4 out of 5 stars. "Screenwriter (and fan!) John 'Gladiator' Logan often hits the bullseye," he said (via the Great Link). "He nails the camaraderie and technobabble, but the drama is never pushed far enough. With Picard and Shinzon there's little sense of what Picard thinks and feels of his clone as he considers how his life might have been." Despite this, Spelling concluded his analysis with a strong recommendation. "If you're just out for a good, old fashioned sci-fi actioner, you can't go wrong with Nemesis." Even more positive was James Brooks in Starburst Magazine. "[John] Logan is smart enough to see the best way to bring the Enterprise-E crew to life and he's not afraid to take it," he wrote. "Like Shinzon, Nemesis is a mirror but the reflection it casts is much more pleasing, one which should captive fans and the mainstream alike." Brooks gave the film a perfect score of 5 out of 5. "'Nemesis' offers all that is great about Star Trek - brilliant action sequences and impressive special effects but of course, as is the tradition with this franchise, it explores greater themes," wrote Amanda Fennelly at RTE Interactive. "In this case, the question of nature versus nurture as Picard comes up against an evil version of himself and ponders just how he would have turned out had he endured the same upbringing as Shinzon."
