(Billboard) - Citing distributor sources, Video Store Magazine reported
Tuesday that "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" will be released on
videocassette April 4. The title will be dubbed for 20th Century Fox Home
Entertainment by
Technicolor Videocassette Services rather than longtime duplicator Deluxe Video
Services,
which has handled all of the previous "Star Wars" releases. Paul Scott,
Technicolor senior
VP worldwide sales, confirmed that his company will handle the duplication,
according to
Video Store. While Deluxe still retains the studio as a customer, it has lost what
is sure to be
the biggest sellthrough title of next year - costing the company perhaps $25
million-$30
million in sales and $10 million in profits. Deluxe does not do DVD duplication,
and that may
have been a factor in Fox's decision, Video Store said, although filmmaker George
Lucas has
not set any of the "Star Wars" films for release in the format. Technicolor,
however, has DVD
capability.
