I know in the USA foreign movies are usually subtitled and rarely dubbed, but in
Italy, the rule is to dub them. These are the many
odd things in the Italian version of the SW trilogy.
R2D2 and C3PO are called respectively C1B8 and D3PO in movies, novels and comics. I
think the name of the first droid was changed
because R2D2 in English reads "Ar-Two-Dee-Two" but in Italian it reads
"Erre-Due-Di-Due", which has an unpleasant sound. The name of
the other droid was probably changed not to repeat the same letters - and it is less
important, as he is usally called 3PO. In
Episode One, the names of both droids are equal to the original ones.
Han, Leia and Vader are called respectively Ian, Leila and Fener. Their original names
were restored in translations of novels and
comics.
"Jabba the Hutt" was translated as "Jabba de' Hutt", altering its meaning. In fact,
the word "de'" isn't an article, but a particle
typically used in surnames. It makes the same effect of "Jabba o'Hutt".
The Death Star is called "Black Death" ("Morte Nera").
The lightsaber is called "laser sword" ("spada laser").
Chewbacca's short form isn't "Chewie" but "Chewbah" (not in novels and comics).
Star destroyers are referred to in the same way as the starfighters. This is because
the word Italian Navy uses to mean a
"destroyer" is "cacciatorpediniere". That very long word in the movies is usually cut
off into "caccia". The trouble is that
"caccia" also means "fighter". This problem was solved in novels and comics. In TESB,
the line "Two fighters against the star
destroyers?" (I'm not sure I'm quoting correctly, as I don't own an English copy of
the trilogy) was translated as "Due caccia
contro i caccia stellari?" which means "Two fighters against the star fighters?"
I sent you as a proof a picture from the Italian version of the comic "Empire's End"
in which 3PO calls Artoo "C1". You can compare
it to an English copy.
