It's an interesting idea. The only downside I've thought of (and granted,
I've dedicated only about 10 seconds of mental processing power at this
point) is that this is not how microblogging services work now, so it will
take a bit of work on the users' part to get used to it.

Users are lazy. They're not going to want to do that, so the vast majority
of links will never been seen.

Especially considering how some of the shortening services have already
closed down, I agree this is a major problem.
