I had a quick look yesterday, but I'm stumped. Re-generating the
italian and spanish .mo didn't work (anyway, the .mo seems to be the
same), changing es to es_ES in lib/languages.php as per chrisf comment
in http://status.net/trac/ticket/1857 makes spanish work but after
changing it back it *still* works.

This needs someone else, someone experienced with gettext / php. It's
a deal-breaker for non-american users off course. Would be nice if it
could be included in unit tests also. But, unfortunately I can't
contribute to this one.
