Just read your message. I was thinking the same thing with the script I wrote. One can possibly add this to the config file as it is for the Twitter oAuth stuff.

bit.ly seems to have changed how their URL shortener works, and no longer
allow just anyone to use it. You have to have a bit.ly account, and
provide credentials for every URL you shorten.

For example, this used to work:
http://bit.ly/api?method=shorten&long_url=www.identi.ca

However, it now returns this error:
{ "errorCode": 203, "errorMessage": "You must be authenticated to access
shorten", "statusCode": "ERROR" }

We'll need to come up with a way for each user to save their bit.ly
credentials in StatusNet, and then for the URL shortener to use them.
