it might be nice to have a single option (in settings) that enables options
(such as on/off for the map) at send time. 

(The three way switch — never | user decides | always — may be less easy to
grasp than a two-way.)

Agreed. 

I'm just a little concerned that the levering the additional feature
(maps/geolocation) into the main part of the UI — now — doesn't leave much
room for future redesign, if/when something more is required, weeks or
months down the line. 

(What that something might be, I can't say. OK, maybe not cross-posting, but
who can say what people will be clamouring for in a year's time?)
