I decided to see what would happen if we got rid of XMLWriter, and just did the string operations directly.
Evan started doing this in July (see http://gitorious.org/~evan/statusnet/evans-mainline/commits/noxml) and Resmus Lerdorf mentioned in his DrupalCon 2008 keynote that removing XMLWriter from Laconica improved performance. Here's my branch: http://gitorious.org/~candrews/statusnet/candrews-clone/commits/noxmlwriter On my system, straight up 0.9.x performs slightly (less than 5%) better than my noxmlwriter branch. Can anyone tell me why?
