Do StatusNet support getting the canonical shortened URL directly from
source? I've got a news paper that has got it's own short URLs but
nobody uses them. However, StatusNet, being cool, should do so.

I think it might not be a good idea for the StatusNet-server itself to
do this job first, maybe the javascript can go to the page, and check
it's parameters, if there is a shortlink-meta-tag, it will use that,
if it is a shortened url already (redirect), it will maybe resolve the
real URL (or not?) and use that to send into StatusNet for shortening.
