I've written up some notes for those who want far too much detail:

My work branch so far is able to run a single user's import via the User
Stream API subset:

http://www.gitorious.org/statusnet/brion-fixes
Pull URL: git://gitorious.org/~brion/statusnet/brion-fixes.git
Branch: twitstream

This should extend relatively cleanly to multi-user Site Streams, at
which point the 'hard part' is connection management and filling in
holes from when the daemons are down. :)

Status update:

I'm still waiting on getting whitelisted access to Twitter's Site Streams API beta to actually test the importer daemon, but a lot of the basic infrastructure is in and it doesn't disrupt other code much.

I'll fold this into mainline 0.9.x shortly, and finalize the daemon for working with large numbers of users and multiple sites once I can test it...
