I Downloaded the 'statusnet.po' file from the translatewiki.net <http://translatewiki.net> and compiled it into binary format as 'statusnet.mo' using "msgformat" command in ubuntu10.10 linux. And i created a folder under locale directory as 'ta' and 'LC_MESSAGES'.After that i placed both '.po' and '.mo' in ta/LC_MESSAGES directory. And also edited the 'language.php' file in lib directory and added an array like this " 'ta' => array('q' => 0.3, 'lang' => 'ta', 'name' => 'Tamil', 'direction' => 'ltr')," in get_all_language function and finished it.But when i try to change the preferred language it does not changes.
Just a warning on grabbing .po files from TranslateWiki directly -- if you're using the "Export translation in Gettext format" option, it actually provides a variant of the .po file which stores TranslateWiki-specific metadata in the context markers.
This is meant for round-tripping through .po editors and sending back up to TranslateWiki, but unfortunately means that the file won't actually work as-is dropped in to StatusNet.
"Export translation to file form" will provide a .po file that's suitable for direct use.
To submit your first file back into the TranslateWiki system, see http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Translating:StatusNet#Translating_offline
