I followed your postings so far, but I don't know if your USR Sportster
Message Pro is a 3COM or USR product. The first Message Pro produced under
brand of 3COM have problems with firmware bugs, so your problem could be
caused by this. I can't use the independent mode until I made the flash
update. Since this, the modems works good (not perfect, but it's a USR,
that's the biggest problem ;)

Poor voice quality is caused by the buggy Rockwell chipset used in the USR
modems, also the certain hangs or the noise heared after recording. For
Windows, the programs use a workaround for this problem to ship around the
chipset bugs.

Tip: Sell the USR and buy another one. Data speed is also poor with USR
modems. I achived max. 5.5 kB sec. with USR, but 6.1 kB sec. with ELSA...
