Good question: "Where can we see it locally?",
but surprisingly difficult to answer.
I have made some enquiries -- in the USA, EU
and UK -- but have not made much progress yet.
Every major city in Western Europe and North
America seems to have at least one "gallery"
selling tacky Zimbabwean curios, but such
places are very misleading.
The only collection of serious sculpture I
know of is the Handelsman collection (it's
private, but they say they appreciate
enthusiastic visitors). There MUST be other
places ... please tell us if you find
something.
There is some excellent public work in
Zimbabwe itself (the permanent collection at
the National Gallery and Chapungu sculpture
park are good starting points), but that
doesn't answer your question.
At the moment, the best advice I can give may
be superfluous ...
- Look out for symposia and exhibitions (there
have been recent events in the UK, Holland,
Germany, USA).
- Get a copy of Olivier Sultan's book "Life in
Stone: Zimbabwean Sculpture - Birth of a
Contemporary Art Form", Baobab Books (1992),
ISBN: 090831146X.
- Save your pennies for a return ticket to
Harare.
- Watch This Space.
