Hi Geoff
The type of carving I do is very primitive compared to
sculpting. My material of choice is sandstone indiginous
to this area - Ohio & Pennsylvania.
I am in the hardscape supply business and carve
birdbaths, planters etc. My tools are ones that I have
fashioned from modern day chisels to replicate the
markings on what I see on old barn, building &
bridgestones.
I am sure you could do the same, I know a stone sculptor
that buys stone from me and he has used wood chisels to
work his stone, really all you need is a bench grinder
and get creative. Keep water handy and don't burn or
allow your tip to turn blue as this will soften the
metal and you will lose your edge very quickly. My
choice of chisel is manufactured for steel, brick,
concrete etc.
I have also read in old books that you can finish your
stone work by rubbing it with a softer piece of stone --
