Remember, you only have ONE pair of lungs. Breathing ANY dust can damage
your health. Different people are susceptible to different dusts, even
house dust can irritate some. Putting on a mask is quick and easy,
exposure to dust that is safe for one person may mean living with a
chronic lung disorder for another.
Paper masks often give a poor seal around the face and should be
discarded at the end of the day. Even if the paper mask is not clogged,
when used for a second day the seal to the face will be worse and the
mask effectiveness is reduced. Good disposable masks can be bought for
about UK2 each. A good twin filter half-mask should cost about UK30.
With some masks, the filters are changed on a 28 day cycle, or when
breathing becomes more difficult. Replacement filter sets cost about
the same as a good disposable mask, therefore if worn regularly, the
filtered respirator soon works out cheaper.
Happy, healthy carving!
