I've used that method for large lettering projects (40' inscriptions of 18"
letters done in situ on buildings). From looking at their work I would tend
suspect the early gravestone carvers worked direct, drawing on the stone.
In particular their lettering layouts and styles look that way to me. But
check with the Association for Gravestone Studies - they're on the web
somewhere, they've probably researched it.
