Hello I am not yet a stone carver - I have always loved stone carvings for their intrinsic aesthetics and their tactile beauty. A little while ago at an open studio event I 'had a go' at stone lettering - and decided I should definately try my hand! I have found a local art's centre to get me going (Wysing Arts www.wysing.demon.co.uk/) and will see if I have what it takes. What has all this got to do with spinning tops? Not a great deal directly! I am a spinning top enthusiast and I continue to be fascinated as I find out more and more. One element that emerges is that spinning tops have in the past been made from stone (e.g. home.millsaps.edu/~sandsj...res.html). Tops have also been used as inspiration for sculpture (e.g. www.jmu.edu/art/miyataart1.html or www.oac.state.oh.us/perce.../top2.jpg) All this is a long winded way of asking if any of you have either made spinning tops or used then as a source of inspiration.
