There is a ready supply of basalt "floaters" on my land and in the adjacent hills...just north of Brisbane, Australia. The stones have good "face" for dry stone retaining walls. Over recent years I have used around 50 tons for this purpose. The red volcanic soil in which these stones are fully imbedded leaves a soft 5-7 mm browney red to orange surface. There are many .5 m to .7 m in diameter. I am now interested in learning to etch or carve some of these wonderful stones...much like a relief sculpture. An idea is to expose the hard blue stone and produce some form and texture with the soft red. I found this page when searching the web and would appreciate benefiting from someone else's experience.
