There there is a black marble quarry in Tazwell Tennessee. It is in the far
northeast corner of the state. When I bought from them it was run by the
Imperial Black Marble Co. Look in the Knoxville listings for additional
information on marble producers. There are a lot in Eastern Tenn. The
quarry is on a state road, up on the side of a 50 mile long ridge called
Cinch Mountian.
The marble is VERY hard and sharp and polishes great. It is challenging
material, but worth the effort. Up close you can see it is a mottled mix of
black and dark gray, with small white pieces. If you back up a few steps it
is black.
I won't touch the issue of weather it is marble or limestone because it does
not matter. The stone is hard, tough, and rings like a bell when hit.
Carborundum grinding wheels cut it good.
If you have air tools and carbide chisels, use them on this stuff!!
